Materials are the tangible elements used to create the building or structure. The materials used immediately impress our senses of sight and touch. Building materials often make us wonder about why they were selected and how they impact the strength and design of the structure. Most structures are made up of a variety of materials.

Consider a skyscaper, like the John Hancock Building in Chicago. The outside or exterior of the skyscraper is primarily made of metal and glass. Many other materials are used in the construction as well.
